People Have Power

Government/Marriage

Marriage equality and the role of government.

Both the Democrats and the Republicans has done little to understand the issues important to the LGBT community. The Democrats offer little to desire with their promotion of “civil unions” reminiscent of separate but equal, in a blatant yet poor attempt to play both sides of the marriage equality issue. Even worse is the politics of the Republicans who continue to pander to the bigotry of the religious right. Neither party has done much to earn the loyalty of the LGBT community. As long as we continue to accept the notion that by supporting the lesser of two evils we will continue to be disappointed and betrayed. A revolution is needed in this country, a rebellion against statism. Natural rights are inherent for every individual. The idea that government can grant or disallow a natural right such as marriage is an idea that must be driven to extinction. Truly the biggest threat to equality is from the government.

I couldn’t agree with your “natural rights” stance more. I think there is a battle going on that pits the idea of marriage being a natural right versus marriage being the domain of religion. I happen to fall on your side of the argument, but many otherwise reasonable people do not.

My eyes roll when I hear arguments that amount to saying there can be no devotion between two individuals – a deep pairing of lives and personality – that can not exist beyond the the walls of religion. Religion’s role has always been to explain the natural phenomena around and within us. Too often it has been used to take credit for them instead.
